Earaches in children

Not only is cold and flu season hit my house already, my 4 year old had his first case otitis media or ear infection over the weekend.

Luckily with a bit of home care we were able to nip it in the butt quickly… the lingering cold symptoms we are still working on.

Ear infections are more common in children for a few reasons, namely the anatomy of the ear canal is horizontal, compared to sloping downward in adults.¬† This results in fluid pooling and draining poorly, when the immune system is challenge by an offending bacteria or virus.¬† In addition to anatomy, children’s immune systems are still developing and so their immune system is constantly working on differentiating “friend from foe”.

  3. Herbal ear oil *before putting anything into the ear, see a health practitioner to determine of the ear drum (tympanic membrane) is perforated
